Competitive events may not all be for me but I'd like to think that there are some which fit me well. It's just that I'm not the most competitive person in the world since I understand my limits and how others may be able to trump me in some cases. Sometimes it's best for me to know where I stand and not try to rock the proverbial boat. Speaking of which, out of any of the obstacle events where I feel like I'd be able to do well in, swimming stands at the top.
I think the reason that I enjoy swimming as much as I do is because I used to do it so frequently as a child that it translated to adulthood quite well. There wasn't a period in my life when I did not have a pool to go to, whether it was located in my backyard or at a local park a couple of streets away from my home. I liked being able to go across water without a care in the world, which was another aspect that came into my adulthood. As a leisurely event, it's a favorite of mine.
When swimming on my own, I don't usually push myself unless I make the conscious choice that I need to be pushed. For example, when I'm around the house, I'm usually swimming absentmindedly in laps or attempting to relax with my back against the surface of the water. I think that many people go about doing such things but if you're talking about obstacle events, I believe you're getting into an entirely different ballgame, in a matter of speaking. These sorts of events, showcased by Spartan Race, will test one's endurance.
Swimming is the kind of event that calls for a higher level of vitality, or at least that's the way I see it. Compared to land, I think that water is far more unpredictable since you have instances of waves which may come in patterns that you're probably not ready for. In addition, think about how you must keep your head above the surface, staying afloat by utilizing your legs and arms. Technique and strength seem to come together to show what these athletes can do.
It doesn't matter if you're talking about relaxation or rigorous activity because the water is one place where I feel at home. You can attribute this to many years of exposure to swimming but it's an activity that I don't think I could have lived my life without. If there was a supernatural ability to sprout gills, you better be certain that I would have accepted the offer. However, real life is still able to give me what I need in terms of physical activity, so I will take it.
